Recently, a client and friend of mine secured their first job as a Data Analyst.
He went from teacher to analyst and earned a 53% percent income increase.
Pretty nice.
But getting there was not easy.
His challenges are also the same challenges that MANY people I speak to deal with.
I cover these challenges in-depth in my latest video, but here is a high level overview of the 3 things we did together to land him his dream job in data.
1. Create a roadmap
You have to know where you’re going.
The skills you need (and how proficient you are/need to be)
The assets you need (portfolio, projects, etc)
Your timeframe (for him it was about 4-5 months)
Your non-negotiables (salary, wfh, location, etc)
Without these, you’ll being to wander, take too long, and you may end up accepting something that isn’t the right fit for you.
2. Engage in a community
For data analysts, the place to be is LinkedIn.
But you need to be active.
Sharing about your journey via posting
Engaging with others through commenting
Soft DM’ing to break the ice (don’t ask for anything up front)
I’d say this is really the secret sauce and I’ve seen it work for people time and time again once they get serious about it.
3. Consistency
So my friend was doing everything mentioned above but still struggling.
The problem, he wasn’t putting in enough effort.
He was creating one project a month, we upped that to 1 a week
He was posting once a week, we upped that to every day
He was commenting on posts a bunch but he wasn’t trying to build relationships, so he started to.
He 10x’d his results once he pushed through these roadblocks.
From there, he just had to remain patient.
In my latest video, I cover all 3 of these points in 17 minutes of great detail.
If you’re short on time, then at least see what I have to say at 05:32.
→ My honest advice to anyone who wants to be a data analyst
That’s it for this week.
